77% Indians port number due to slow internet speed, poor signal

Consumers across the country are facing trouble because of not receiving proper signal on their phones and slow internet speed. In the last 12 years, out of 102 crore active users, 78.97 crore, that is around 77% have ported their numbers. As per a latest TRAI report, from April to December in 2022-23, 9.4 crore users have ported their numbers. Back in 2021-22, 11.3 crore had done the same, which is the highest in the last 8 years.

Another trend which can be seen emerging is that of people switching over from internet to broadband services. The number of internet users has fallen from 82.53 crores to 82.48 crores, while broadband users have increased from 77.8 crores to 78.8 crores. The number of wireline users has gone up from 2.02 crores to 2.48 crores, and 3.88 crore phone numbers have been de-activated. On the other hand, outgoing call time in the last 5 years has doubled up. Back in 2016-17, the average time of outgoing calls on mobile phones was 405 minutes per month, which, in 2021-22, increased to 955 minutes, which is more than double.

In 2021-22, the average data usage per customer was 15.8 GB per month, and the cost of per GB data was 10.47 rupees. While back in 2016-17, the average monthly data usage per customer was 1 GB, and its cost was 40.34 rupees per GB. Naturally, the prices of data falling have affected the DTH connections. Around 26 lakh customers got their DTH connections removed during a year. In 2020-21, the number of DTH customers dropped from 6.95 crores to 6.69 crores in 2021-22.
