Agartala: The Tripura Bar Council on Thursday condemned the remark of Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju against retired judges and alleged that it was an attempt of the central government to intervene in the judiciary.

Addressing media here veteran advocate and president of the Bar Council Purushottam Ray Barman said that the remark made by the union law minister is derogatory where he termed some retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts as anti-Indian.

Recently in a conclave, Rijiju had claimed that a few retired judges and some activists who are “part of the anti-India gang” are trying to make the Indian judiciary play the role of the opposition party.

Ray Barman said, “We believe that the Centre is trying to pressure the judiciary by restricting the judges to talk against the government. It is a threat to judges who refuse to bow down to the government.

He further alleged that the Central government is making a ‘dictatorial’ rule across the nation. The Centre is trying to capture all democratic institutions including the Indian judiciary.

The Center wants the Supreme Court and the entire judicial system of the country to be under the thumb of the Center, the proof of which has become clear in the speech of the Vice President of the country and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The senior advocates of the Tripura High Court had written to the Chief Justice of India Justice D Y Chandrachud and other members of the collegium to demand appointment of permanent Chief Justice of Tripura High Court and to fill up vacant posts of judges of the High Court.

The advocates demanded the appointment of justice Aparesh Kumar Singh as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court in terms of the Collegium recommendation made on February 7 last but to date, Law Ministry has not acted upon the recommendation.
