TN to hold talks with Kerala on Siruvani river check dam issue : Duraimurugan

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government will hold talks with the Kerala government on the latter’s move to construct a check dam across Siruvani river, Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan informed the State Assembly on Friday.

Replying to a Special Call Attention Motion given notice of by Opposition AIADMK Whip S.P.Velumani, the Minister said according to the latest information received, Kerala has plans to construct a check dam across Siruvani.

He said the officials from his Department would hold talks with their Kerala counterparts on the issue or he himself would hold talks.

Drawing the government’s attention, Mr Velumani said Siruvani was a major source of drinking water for Coimbatore city and cited newspaper reports which said 90% of the check dam construction works across Siruvani river were completed by the Kerala government.

When Mr Duraimurugan said he would depute officials to visit the area to ascertain the facts, Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K.Palaniswami intervened and said it was a major issue for Coimbatore and urged the government to act.

Responding to this, Mr Duraimurugan said the State government will hold talks with Kerala government on the issue.
