Brasilia: The death toll from a cyclone that hit Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul on Monday has risen to 36, Brazilian news portal G1 reported Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, media reported that 31 people had died in the storm.

The cyclone formed on Monday night and brought strong gusts of wind and intense rainfall, which caused flooding and river overflows, according to media reports.

Almost 3,000 people were forced to leave their homes, while over 1,600 were left without a roof over their heads, the news portal reported earlier on Wednesday. A total of 66 Brazilian cities and towns were affected, it added.
