Zoramthanga resigns as Mizoram CM after ZPM’s landslide victory in state

On Monday, December 4, the counting of votes took place for the northeastern state of Mizoram, and the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) registered a landslide victory, defeating the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF), and winning 27 seats out of the 40 constituency seats in the state. While the ZPM, Congress, and the MNF contested on all the 40 seats, the BJP contested on 23 seats only; 21 seats being the majority mark.

The ZPM is a coalition of six organizations, the Mizoram People’s Conference, Zoram Nationalist Party, Zoram Exodus Movement, Zoram Decentralization Front, Zoram Reformation Front, and the Mizoram People’s Party.

After MNF’s defeat, the former Chief Minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga met with Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati at 4.00 PM in the evening, and tendered his resignation. Not only this, Zoramthanga also faced defeat on his own assembly seat, that is, Aizawl East-I. It is ZPM’s Lalthansanga who has won the seat, by a margin of 2, 101 votes.

Crucial seats won by the ZPM in the state include Chalfilh, Aizawl North-I, II, III, Aizawl West-I, II, and Aizawl South-I, II, III, among others. The MNF won 10 seats, including those of Thorang, Hachhek, and Mamit. The BJP has won 2 seats which are Saiha and Palak. The Congress registered victory on 1 seat of Lawngtlai West.
