Paris: French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Monday that he intended to resign after the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The day before, Darmanin told Le Figaro newspaper that his task is to ensure security for the successful holding of the Olympics, after which his “cycle in the Ministry of Internal Affairs will end.”
“After the Olympic Games, my mission will be completed,” Darmanin was quoted as saying by the BFMTV broadcaster.
The minister also expressed the opinion that the reshuffle in the French cabinet was made in order to prepare President Emmanuel Macron’s party for the upcoming European Parliament elections in June. In his opinion, the new government “will not last long.”
Last week, a new composition of the French government was announced. Darmanin was reportedly expected to take the post of prime minister. The politician has served as interior minister since June 2020.
