On Wednesday, a magistrate court in Mumbai, Maharashtra, allowed the Mumbai police’s application to withdraw prosecution in the alleged TRP scam case from the year 2020, in which the Republic Media Network and Arnab Goswami was an accused.
The Maharashtra government decided to withdraw the case.
Back in 2020, the TRP scam case was handled by the then Mumbai police commissioner, Parambir Singh, and the police alleged that along with others, Arnab Goswami had rigged the channel TRPs and inflated their ratings.
It was argued in the court by Special Public Prosecutor, Shishir Hiray, that it was anticipated by the investigators that those who felt cheated, and were the victims of the TRP rigging scam would come forward to record their statements, but nobody showed up.
Also noting that the witnesses gave contradictory statements, Hiray said that it was felt that the case would not lead to any conviction, and would only waste the judiciary’s time and the government’s efforts.
