Abuja: At least 170 people have died in Nigeria as a result of flooding that hit the country several weeks ago, CNN reported, citing Nigerian National Emergency Management Authority spokesperson Manzo Ezekiel.

On Monday, the Punch newspaper reported that agricultural lands in ten states in northern Nigeria were severely affected by floods caused by continuous rainfall, threatening to worsen the country’s food crisis.

Over 200,000 people have been displaced due to the natural disaster, the report said on Tuesday, adding that Northern Nigeria has been hit hardest by the floods.

At the same time, other parts of the country also remain at risk due to heavy rains and rising water levels in two largest rivers – the Niger and the Benue, the report read.

“In the coming days, the central parts will soon witness similar floods, and even downwards to the southern parts,” Ezekiel was quoted as saying by the broadcaster.

About 2,000 people have been injured and more than 100,000 hectares of agricultural land have been destroyed in Nigeria as a result of the recent floods, the report added.
