Agartala: The Governor of Telangana and former Deputy Chief Minister of the BJP government of Tripura, Jishnu Dev Varma, flagged off a truck carrying essential relief materials for the flood affected families on Sunday from Hyderabad.

The consignment is expected to reach Agartala on Wednesday, officials said here.

In a significant gesture of support for flood-affected families, the Indian Red Cross Society Telangana state branch sponsored the relief, which will be distributed among the affected people by its Tripura counterpart.

The truck is loaded with baby food, clothing, mosquito nets, emergency medicine, and other necessities intended for 1,000 affected families. In his social media handle, Governor Dev Varma wrote, “Wherever there is calamity, the Red Cross is always there. Today, as President of the Red Cross Society of Telangana, I flagged off the relief materials for the victims of floods in Tripura.”

He further stated, “I had a telephone conversation with the Tripura Chief Minister, and he expressed his appreciation for this humanitarian effort of the Red Cross Society of Telangana. This is also a step forward in fostering National Integration- Telangana reaching out to the other end of our great, diverse country- The North East.”

With the generous donation from the common people of the state along with governments of UP, MP, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh, and Assam, the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund swells to over Rs 100 crore. The central government has also sanctioned a primary grant of Rs 40 crore and sent a central team for on spot loss assessment.

The Tripura government estimated loss and damages due to the flood reached Rs 15000 crore and claimed as many as 32 lives and directly affected 1.28 lakh people in all eight districts of the state. All the major roads, including national highways, have been badly damaged due to a flood-triggered sudden downpour between August 19 and 23.
