Nukualofa: Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga Siaosi Sovaleni announced his resignation on Monday ahead of a no-confidence motion expected to be tabled in parliament later in the day.

“I’ll be resigning as Prime Minister for Tonga, in accordance with Clause 50A (2)(c) of the Constitution, effective immediately today,” Sovaleni was quoted as saying by Tongan online newspaper Matangi Tonga.

The intention to submit the motion was reportedly made by a group of 10 lawmakers on November 23 amid tense relations between the prime minister and King Tupou VI. Sovaleni already survived a vote of no confidence in September 2023.
