New Delhi: Amid the collapse of the Bashar Al-Assad government in Syria after Damascus fell to Islamist militants of the Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), India said on Monday that it is monitoring the situation in that country.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs also said that it advocates a peaceful and inclusive Syria-led political process where the interests and aspirations of all sections of society are respected.

“We are monitoring the situation in Syria in the light of on-going developments. We underline the need for all parties to work towards preserving the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. We advocate a peaceful and inclusive Syrian-led political process respecting the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society.

“Our Embassy in Damascus is in contact with the Indian community, for their safety and security.”

On Sunday, sources said that the Indian Embassy was continuing to function and is in touch with all Indian nationals, and they are safe.

“The Embassy remains available to assist Indian nationals in Syria,” the sources added.

The statement came as Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad departed the country after giving orders for a peaceful transfer of power.

The Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS) militants declared they had ousted Assad after seizing control of Damascus on Sunday.
