‎New Delhi: ‎Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid homage to freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, popularly known as Veer Savarkar, on his death anniversary, describing him as a “great revolutionary” who dedicated his life to India’s independence.

‎In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Respectful tributes to the great revolutionary Veer Savarkar on his death anniversary. He dedicated his life to freeing the country from the chains of slavery. His personality and contributions will continue to inspire every generation to serve the nation.”

‎Savarkar, a prominent figure in India’s freedom movement, was known for his role in revolutionary activities against British colonial rule and for his writings on nationalism and Hindutva. Arrested in 1909 for alleged involvement in anti-British activities, he was sentenced to transportation for life and spent years in incarceration at the Cellular Jail in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

‎Over the decades, Savarkar has remained a significant and sometimes debated figure in Indian political discourse.

‎The Prime Minister’s tribute comes as leaders across the political spectrum mark Savarkar’s death anniversary with commemorations and messages recalling his contributions to the freedom struggle.

‎Born in 1883, Savarkar passed away on February 26, 1966. His life and writings continue to influence discussions on nationalism, identity, and India’s historical narrative.
