India joins 62-nation coalition supporting Australia and EU demand for inquiry into the Coronavirus

New Delhi: India has reportedly joined a global coalition of 62-nations to back Australia’s call for an independent inquiry into the coronavirus in a draft resolution to put to the World Health Assembly (WHA) on May 19, 2020.

Besides India, Australia has been backed by Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, South Korea, Turkey, Russia, Indonesia, Mexico, Brazil and all 27 European Union members.

The resolution to be presented to WHA demands that the Director-General of  World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus initiates at the earliest a stepwise process of impartial, independent and comprehensive evaluation’ of the international response to the pandemic, the actions of WHO and its timeline of the pandemic.

WHO’s own role will also allow be under scrutiny for the alleged slowness in responding to the pandemic, and its praise for China’s response despite Beijing’s concealment of the virus during its crucial early weeks and punishment of whistleblowing doctors.
