The huge journalism media network of India is now going to face reinvigoration in its ambit as Google has launched its Google news showcase in the country.

The google news showcase is a platform built to reach out to each individual with quality news in the times of Covid and then it provides the reader with the news of their choice under the Discover and Feed column along with Google news.

The initiative by Google Inc has been launched in India after its successful reach in many other countries like the UK, Germany, Brazil, France, Canada, Australia, Japan, Czechia, Italy, and Argentina with work underway in many other countries.

The main aim is to serve people with the news of high accuracy. It also provides the content from an Indian publisher in English as well as Hindi making it easier for the reader to know the facts without any manipulation with the data. Google likely to incorporate other regional languages later this year.

“This builds on News Showcase deals signed by 700 news publications in more than a dozen countries including Germany, Brazil, Canada, France, Japan, the UK, Australia, Czechia, Italy, and Argentina, more than 90% of them representing local or community news- with discussions underway in several other countries,” asserted Brad Bender, Vice President, product management, News.

Around 30 national, regional and local publishers have signed the agreement with Google-like Indo Asian News Service (IANS), Republic Media Network, Reuters, Sanmarg, The Statesman, ABP Live, India TV, Zee News, Amar Ujala, Deccan Herald, Punjab Kesari, The Tribune, Kalinga TV, The Hindu, The Indian Express group, HT Digital Streams Ltd, NDTV, The Telegraph Online, ANI, Business Standard, Dainik Savera, The Hans India, The Free Press, The India Today group, ITV Network, Lokmat (Hindi), News 24, Prabhat Khabar, and The Siasat Daily.

Putting it short, the google news showcase is a licensing program to help the news industry which helps participating publishers share their experience and editorial voice through an enhanced storytelling experience.

Sanjay Gupta, Vice President, Google India claimed “We’ve committed to launching in additional Indic languages this year and we’ll continue to incorporate more languages in the future. As part of our licensing agreements with publishers, we’re also paying participating news organizations to give readers access to a limited amount of paywalled content.”

Google also offers to pay the readers free access to read paywalled articles on a publisher’s domestic site. By doing such the readers can get the reach to the content they might not know and the publishers can grow their audience at a time.

It even provides the learning journalists to thrive in the digital age and will train over 50,000 journalists with increased support from the News Lab in the upcoming three years.

Google in its blog said, “We’ll focus on digital tools to aid verification and combat misinformation online, and we’ll expand our programs to connect Indian journalists and fact-checkers.”

The GNI Advertising lab which provides training sessions and implementation came forward to support more than 800 small Indian news organizations to grow their digital ad revenue.

The motive of the huge investments is to help people find quality journalism, and quality information, contribute to the sustainability of the news organizations, and expand our programs under the Google News initiative. This will enable the news organizations to engage their readers in an all-new way through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
