Washington: The campaign of former US President and Republican presidential contender Donald Trump said on Sunday that gunshots were fired in the vicinity of the politician.

“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung said.

US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene confirmed this information on X, saying that an assassination attempt has been made on Trump.

At the same time, the presidential candidate’s eldest son, Donald John Trump Jr., said that an AK-47 rifle was found near the scene of a shooting at Trump’s golf course. The son added that Donald Trump is safe, while the suspect has been reportedly apprehended.

In July, a shooter attempted to assassinate Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The gunman shot Trump in the ear, killed one audience member, and wounded two others.

US law enforcement authorities and lawmakers are investigating the assassination attempt, for which an exact motive remains unclear.
