Washington: US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Deputy Director Paul Abbate may become bureau’s interim director instead of Christopher Wray, who has decided to resign, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.
Abbate is a respected veteran of the bureau, the report said. However, he is already close to retirement and it is unknown whether he will remain in the FBI after Wray’s resignation, which should take place before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump, the report added.
On Wednesday, Wray announced his early retirement. Trump, commenting on Wray’s decision, said that under his leadership the FBI has “used their vast powers to threaten and destroy many innocent Americans, some of which will never be able to recover from what has been done to them.”
On November 30, Trump nominated his aide Kash Patel to head the FBI.
