With only a few months remaining for the Rajasthan State Assembly elections, scheduled to be held in December this year, the Congress has started doing what the party has expertise in, freebie politics. Rajasthan Chief Minister, who had earlier announced that reservation quota in the state will be increased to a record 72 percent, has now made another announcement stating that his government will provide 100 units of electricity free per month to all the consumers- domestic and commercial.

Further, he has also promised a waiver of permanent fee, fuel surcharge, and other fees on consumers up to 200 units of electricity. Gehlot, making this announcement, said that no consumer will get any bill for the first 100 units of power consumed. With this, consumers across the state will have to pay nothing with 100 units of power consumed, while those with 200 units of consumption will have to pay Rs 503 rather than 1610 Rs, which is the current amount.

Taking to Twitter late at night on Wednesday, 31st May, Ashok Gehlot said, “After observing the Mehengai Rahat Camps and talking to the people, there came feedback that there should be a slight change in the slab-wise exemption in electricity bills. Feedback was also received from the public regarding the fuel surcharge in the electricity bills in the month of May, on the basis of which, a big decision has been taken”.
