Tremors were sent across the South African town of Mandeni, situated in the KwaZulu-Natal province, after the dead bodies of seven members of the Monswamy family were found in Melmoth on Wednesday, April 22. The murdered were taken from there Newtown home on Tuesday, after their home was invaded by those involved in the gruesome crime.

The victims were aged between 20 and 80 years, and there were four women and three men, and while some were shot, others were stabbed; and as per police investigation, the youngest victim, a 20-year-old woman, was also raped before she was murdered in cold blood. As per the KwaZulu-Natal police, it was the family’s domestic help who arrived at their home on Wednesday morning and discovered that the house had been broken into.

During their investigation, the police traced two of the suspects to the Hlomendlini area, and the third once was arrested from the Sundumbili area. The three suspects had led the police to the dead bodies later. These arrested suspects were also found to be in possession of two mobile phones, linked to the victims.

In the wake of this horrific incident, the residents of Mandeni are fearful and shocked, as this is the first time that a crime of such scale involving a home invasion, kidnapping, rape, and murder has taken place in the town. People are now worried about their lives even while being at their own homes. The community is not only worried and afraid; it is also angry as the Monswamy family was well-known and respected among the community members. The Monswamy family head was a businessman.

It was on Sunday, April 26, that the Monswamy family members were laid to rest in KwaDukuza. And while the Mandeni community is united in grief, one suspect remains to be apprehended; and the local police and administration have vowed to bring all those responsible for the gruesome crime, to justice.
