Stalin releases water from Mettur dam for irrigation

Chennai: For the third successive year, the sluice dates of the Mettur Dam (Stanley Reservoir) was opened on the scheduled date of June 12 today for irrigation in Cauvery delta region of the State.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin released the water from the dam for Cauvery Delta irrigation in the presence of Salem District Collector S. Karmegam and Ministers Duraimurugan, KN Nehru and MRK Pannerselvam by showering flower petals.

About 17.37 lakh acres of agricultural lands in 12 districts–Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Karur, Tiruchy, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, and Nagapattinam–will get irrigation facilities through water released from the Mettur Dam.

Earlier, Mr Stalin inspected the desilting works in the Cauvery delta region to ensure that the water released from the dam reached the tailend areas for the benefit of farmers.
