Suspect of Kozhikode train fire incident in UP

Bulandshahr (UP): A suspect of Kozhikode train fire incident in which three persons were killed and several others were injured was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) from Siyana area of Bulandshahr district on Tuesday, a senior officer said here.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shlok Kumar said that the STF arrested Sharukh Safi from Akbarabad locality on the basis of a sketch. He said that now the police will quiz Shahrukh in detail about his involvement in the train fire incident.

He said that on April 2 night there was a dispute over a seat in D-1 coach of Alappuzha- Kannur Executive express train at Elathur. “The accused poured inflammable liquid on passengers in D-1 compartment of the train in which three people, (who jumped from the train as an attempt to escape) were killed including a two year old child and nine other commuters including three women suffered burn injuries,” he said.

The SSP said that the accused fled from the spot after the train stopped when the passengers pulled the emergency chain. “The police recovered a bag and a switched off mobile phone from the spot along with a notepad in which information regarding places in Thiruvananthapuram and Kanyakumari were written. The police also recovered a bottle of petrol from the bag,” he said.

He said that two hours after the incident the picture of the suspect was released by the Kerala police on the basis of CCTV footage after which the UP STF carried out a raid and arrested Safi.
