Paris: Indian wrestling star Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement following a disqualification at the Paris Olympics 2024.

The 29-year-old athlete was disqualified from the 50 Kg freestyle final on Wednesday after weighing in slightly over the permissible limit, missing the mark by just 100 grams.

In an emotional message posted on X, Vinesh expressed her heartbreak, stating, “Maa kushti jeet gayi, main haar gayi” (Wrestling has defeated me, I have lost). She apologised to her fans and acknowledged that her courage has crumbled, leaving her unable to continue her wrestling career. Her farewell marks the end of a remarkable career that began in 2001 and spanned over two decades.

Despite the unfortunate end to her Olympic journey, Vinesh made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of a wrestling event at the Olympics. Her dominant 5-0 victory over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez earned her a spot in the final, showcasing her exceptional talent and determination.

Vinesh has filed an appeal against her disqualification with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), requesting that she be awarded the silver medal. The CAS has acknowledged the appeal and is expected to deliver its final verdict by Thursday.

In her heartfelt message, Vinesh expressed her gratitude to her supporters, stating that she will forever be indebted to them. “Alvida, kushti,” she concluded, bidding farewell to the sport that defined her life for over two decades.

The sports community and fans have been reacting to Vinesh’s announcement. Actress Hema Malini’s comment on Vinesh’s situation has gone viral, and Kangana Ranaut also shared her thoughts, advising Vinesh not to be disheartened.
