1,911 gms Gold worth Rs 98.03 lakh seized at airport

Chennai: Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) have seized 1,911 gms of gold valued at Rs 98.03 lakh from a passenger, who arrived from Dubai via Colombo at the airport.

An official release today said, based on Intelligence received, AIU Officers arrested a male passenger, who was travelling from Dubai to Chennai via Colombo.

In an attempt to smuggle gold into India, the passenger carried gold from Dubai to Colombo and attempted to hand over the same to selected passengers bound for Chennai from Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines flight.

The passenger was identified based on specific intelligence and one gold ingot, 23 gold cut bits and 6 gold rings all of 24K purity and totally weighing 1,911 gms, valued at Rs. 98.03 lakhs were recovered from him.

The gold and seized under Customs Act, 1962. The passenger was arrested and later released on bail. Further investigation is under progress.
