On Tuesday, Sister Lucy Kalappura, who had protested against Bishop Franco Mulakkal in the nun rape case, and as a result, was later expelled by the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, under the Roman Catholic Church, in August, 2019, began an indefinite fast, protesting against her convent in Mananthavady, Kerala, and accused the convent of not providing her with the basic amenities there. As per Sister Lucy, she was denied basic, yet the most important requirements like food and other facilities by the convent authorities.

She further added that she had been isolated by the convent inmates and humiliated by them. A local court had allowed her to stay at the convent till the case against Bishop Franco and the case regarding her eviction were over. She also said that the convent authorities were blatantly violating all the directives, which were passed as an interlocutory order by a local Mananthavady court. A police team from the Vellamunda police station had recently visited the convent and met with her and the convent authorities.

Sister Lucy Kalappura had taken part in the protest organized by the nuns belonging in the Missionaries of Jesus Congregation, demanding the arrest of Bishop Franco Mulakkal, after accusations of raping a nun were leveled against him.
