Cong attacks Centre over farmers’ issue

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday launched a fresh attack on the Narendra Modi-led government over issues concerning the farmers and accused it of snatching their rights.

“The policy of the Modi government is to take away the rights of farmers. It made tall claim of benefiting 14.5 crore farmers through PM-KISAN yojana.

“The truth is that installment after installment, the number of beneficiary farmers is decreasing,” Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge wrote in a tweet.

Attacking the PM, Kharge asked, “Mr Modi. Whom are you benefiting by taking away the rights of the farmers?”

The Congress has been accusing the Centre of failing to address the issues of farmers and termed it “anti-farmer”. It had earlier accused the Modi government of benefiting few industrialists.

As per an RTI reply by the Agriculture Ministry, data suggests that the number of beneficiaries of the scheme came down from 11.84 crore to 3.87 crore since the first instalment in February 2019 till the 11th instalment in May-June 2022.

The Centre has said families have so far received more than Rs 2 lakh crore under the scheme.
