Bengaluru: An FIR has been filed against the construction company for the deaths of a woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old son after an under construction metro pillar fell on them while they were travelling on a scooter as pillion riders.

The contractor has been identified as Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC), which is a Hyderabad-based company. It has been named accused No.1 in the case. Apart from the NCC, employees of the BMRCL have also been booked in the case, police said.

Other accused are: NCC Joint Engineer Prabhakar (Accused No.2), NCC Director Chaitanya (Accused No.3), NCC SPM Mathai (Accused No.4), NCC PM Vikas Singh (Accused No.5), NCC Supervisor and Site Manager Lakshmipathy (Accused No.6), BMRCL Deputy Chief Engineer Venkatesh Shetty (Accused No.7) and BMRCL Executive Engineer Mahesh Bendekari (Accused No.8).

Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai had promised to take action in next 24 hours against the culprits.

On Tuesday, he said the state government will initiate an investigation into the tragedy and provide compensation to the affected family.

Soon after the accident, a video clipping of it had gone viral on social media, depicting the falling of the metro pillar along the Nagawara line and bystanders rushing to help the family.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) assured a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for the family of the deceased and blamed the contractor and the concerned engineers.

BMRCL MD Anjum Parwez stated that all precautions were taken and in spite of that, such an accident occurred. “We have to conduct detailed investigation into the accident,” he said.
