A big initiative has been taken in the country in order to promote the use of bio-fuels. On Monday, the buying and selling of petrol with 20% ethanol mix (E-20), started across select petrol pumps around 11 states and union territories of the country. Under the first phase, the sale of this petrol has begun in 15 cities of the country, and within the next two years, the sale of E-20 petrol will begin all across India.

Marking the beginning of the India Energy Week, 2023, PM Modi, on Monday, said that the sale of petrol with 20% ethanol mix was to start two months later, but it has been launched before the targeted time.

Back in 2014, the ethanol mixture into petrol was increased from 1.5% to 10%, and with the mixing of 10% ethanol in petrol, the country saves foreign exchange worth 53, 894 crore Rupees, and the increasing use of ethanol also benefits the farmers of the country. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said that the retail sale of petrol with 20% ethanol has begun across 84 petrol pumps of the cities of the first phase.
