Los Angeles: “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” an animated film based on Nintendo’s Mario video game franchise, topped the North American box office with an estimated three-day cume of 146.36 million dollars on its opening weekend, data from the measurement firm Comscore showed on Sunday.

The film from Nintendo and Illumination, being released worldwide by Universal Pictures, has scored the biggest opening weekend so far this year and the second-biggest opening weekend for an animated film in North America.

It has grossed an estimated 204 million dollars in North America in its first five days of release, according to Comscore.

The film “had a monumental weekend and its performance is a testament to the perfectly executed marketing and release strategy that enabled the film to power up to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office,” Comscore’s senior movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian wrote in an email to Xinhua.

The film holds an approval rating of 56 percent based on 204 reviews to date on the review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned an “A” on an “A+” to “F” scale from audiences polled by the market research firm CinemaScore.

Internationally, the film has grossed an estimated 173 million dollars from 70 markets, including over 11.6 million dollars from the Chinese mainland, pushing its total global revenue to 377 million dollars.

It’s the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated title globally, according to Comscore.
