Bengaluru: Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar on Friday drew comfort after the returning officer accepted his nomination from Kanakapura constituency to contest the May 10 assembly election in the state.

Yesterday DK Suresh, a Congress MP, had filed his nomination from the same seat from where his brother Shivakumar is contesting. This step was taken by the Congress to play safe in case the election officials rejected the Karnataka Congress chief’s nomination.

Giving reasons for Suresh filing the nomination, Shivakumar told reporters that the BJP could play foul as about 5,000 people have downloaded his property declaration papers submitted to EC officials before filing the nomination.

The papers declare Shivakumar owning property worth more than Rs 1,414 crore, of which he alone owns Rs 1,214-plus crore. Several cases relating to Income Tax violations and money laundering have been foisted against him. Some of them are being heard by various courts in the country.

In this backdrop, Congress fielded Suresh in the eventuality of rejection of his nomination papers.

Minister R Ashok Ashoka is contesting against Shivakumar in Kanakapura constituency.
