Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M.K.Stalin today formally launched the year long birth centenary celebrations of late CM and DMK Patriarch M.Karunanidhi by releasing the logo, besides announcing an International Convention Centre to be named after Mr Karunanidhi.

Mr Stalin, Former West Bengal Governor Gopalakrishna Gandhi and State Ministers unveiled the logo during the centenary celebrations of Mr Karunanidhi at a function held at Kalaivanar Arangam in the city where a photo exhibition depicting the life history of the late
leader was also inaugurated.

In his address, Mr Stalin announced that a world class International Convention Centre would be set up in Chennai and it would named after Mr Karunanidhi, whose face was the government’s logo and his ideas were its philosophy.

He said he hit upon the idea of setting up the Convention Centre recently during his recent official visit to Singapore and Japan to woo investors and attract investments into the State.

“It is my wish that it should be a world-class convention Centre,” he added.

The International Convention Centre would be set up on 25-acre land with a capacity to accommodate 5,000 people, will hold international trade exhibitions, technological conferences, events by international institutions and international film festivals.

It would be on par with convention centres available in many countries, he said at the ‘Kalaignar’ (as Mr Karunanidhi was affectionately called) centenary fete in the city.

Though the present Chennai Trade Centre in the city was spread over 10,000 sqft and an additional 12,000 sqft building was being added, they were not adequate to meet the future requirements and the growing demand.

There will be world-class conference and exhibition halls, star-status hotels, media halls, parks and international vehicle parking,” he added.

Hailing Mr Karunanidhi as the “architect of modern Tamil Nadu”, Mr.Stalin said the convention centre would continue to propagate the contributions made by the late leader even after hundreds of years.

The birth anniversary of Mr Karunanidhi happens tomorrow and the ruling DMK has planned year long celebrations in a grand manner.

As Mr Karunanidhi turns 100 tomorrow, plans are afoot to commemorate it as a centenary throughout the year.

On behalf of Tamil Nadu government and DMK, plans are being made to bring people together and celebrate to honour him.
