Kolkata: A massive fire broke out at a plastic factory cum godown at the industrial Ghusuri in Howrah district, close to this city, early on Tuesday, a day after a blaze damaged a portion of a jute mill in the same thickly populated area, police and fire brigade sources said.

There had been no immediate report of any casualty in the fire, which had thickened the sky with black smoke as the fire brigade personnel were trying to ascertain the source of fire at the scene, which is surrounded by manufacturing units and residential buildings, they added.

Two firefighting vehicles were pressed into service to combat the leaping flames, which were also aided by the winds blowing from the nearby Ganges.

The fire brigade was trying to ascertain if the fire had started in the godown or in the plastic factory.

Police cordoned off the area to assist the fire fighting personnel and more fire combat vehicles were on standby.

On Monday, a portion of a jute mill in Howrah’s industrial area at Foreshore Road near this city was destroyed in fire.

The Vijayshree jute mill on the Foreshore Road was damaged.

The industrial areas also witnessed a massive blaze on November 10, in which three factories and godown were razed into the ground.
