Thiruvananthapuram: Final screening of 20 captivating films today

Thiruvananthapuram: Here’s the last chance to experience 20 cinematic marvels at International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) on Tuesdays, featuring Radu Jude’s Oscar entry, ‘Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World.’

The dark comedy film discusses issues like corporate capitalism and exploitation in the workplace and had already earned audience applause at IFFK. The lineup also includes five classic films from across various categories.

Under the world cinema category, seven films will be playing, including ‘Stepne’ by Maryna Vroda, ‘The Promised Land’ by Nikolaj Arcel, ‘The Song of the Auricanturi’ by Camila Rodríguez Triana, ‘Explanation for Everything’ by Gábor Reisz, ‘Music’ by Angela Schanelec, ‘The Bohemian’ by Petr Václav, and ‘Girl’ by Adura Onashile.

Five single-screenings of masterful films include ‘The Guerilla Fighter’ in accordance with Mrinal Sen’s centenary celebration and ‘The Portuguese Woman,’ directed by Iffk jury Rita Azevedo Gomes.

In remembrance of the legends, the Homage category will be screening ‘Distant Voices Still Lives’ by Terence Davies, ‘Cousin Angelica’ by Carlos Saura, and ‘Brick and Mirror’ by Ebrahim Golestan.

Tuesday’s schedule also includes ‘Sulthana’s Dream,’ an engrossing animation film directed by Isabel Herguera, and the final showing of ‘The Year of the Quiet Sun’, ‘Spiral’, and ‘Perfect Number’ under the Krzysztof Zanussi Retrospective. Cuban films such as ‘The Major’ by Rigoberto Lopez, ‘Cuba Libre!’ by Jorge Luis Sanchez, and ‘Innocence’ by Alejandro Gil fall under the country focus category.

The Spanish film Southern Storm from the International Competition category and Me Captain from the World Cinema category are entering the second round of screening on the fifth day of IFFK.

Directed by Edgardo Dillek and Daniel Casabe, ‘Southern Storm’ tells the story of Jorge Villafanez, a private detective who handles the cases with ease.

But his life changes after he takes up a messy case of an experimental choreographer Elvira Schulz. The Argentinian drama-thriller was screened at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and the 24th Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema. The show will be screened at Tagore Theater at 11.30 pm on Tuesday.

The French film ‘Me Captain’, directed by Matteo Garon, tells the story about Seydou and Moussa who leave Dakar and go to Europe.

The story unfolds as a contemporary Odyssey, through the dangers of the desert, the horrors of the detention centers in Libya and the perils of the sea.

The film was screened at the 2023 San Sebastian International Film Festival and won Award for Best European Film and various awards at the Venice Film Festival. The screening of the film is at 8.30 pm at New theater on screen one.

The Malayalee filmmaker Ananad Ekarshi sets the benchmark so high with his remarkable debut film Aatam. Featured under the Malayalam Cinema Today category, the film grabbed the minds of audience right after its first screening at IFFK on Saturday. The huge crowd welcomed the film wholeheartedly.

The story of a theatre group titled Arangu, the chance availed for them to be recognized internationally with their 12 men and single woman play and the further happenings make the perfect one-line for the movie.

The film brutally criticises the cooked-up progressiveness of men and peels of the mask they hide behind. Developing through many complexities reveals the suspense held back one by one. Aattam turns to be a movie that puts forward a completely new visual treat for its audience.

Vinay Fort, Zarin Shihab, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Nandhan Unni along with nine other experienced actors from the drama field holds the casting of the film.

Screened as the opening film of the Indian Panorama category at IFFI Goa, the film is honoured with Grand Jury Award at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles. The film set to be released on January 5 2024 is having its second screening at the IFFK stage on Tuesday.
