Washington: The US Senate passed a continuing resolution to temporarily fund the federal government and avert a shutdown, granting lawmakers more time to pass appropriations bills over the next several weeks.

Senators passed the stopgap funding measure in a vote of 77-13 on Thursday.

Earlier on Thursday, the US House of Representatives also passed the measure, which now awaits final approval from President Joe Biden.

On Wednesday, congressional leaders announced their plan to pass a continuing resolution ahead of a shutdown deadline on Friday. The plan also includes passing multiple sets of appropriations bills in the coming weeks.

In addition, the Senate rejected attempts to add aid for Israel and to add Republican House-passed bill HR2, which is a border security measure that would have reinstated some Trump-era immigration policies.
