Johannesburg: Ten people have lost their lives in KwaZulu-Natal Province, eastern South Africa, due to recent heavy rains, the provincial government said Tuesday.

Heavy rains, strong winds and hail storms battered parts of the province Sunday night and Monday, resulting in extensive damage to households and infrastructure, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government said in a statement posted on its official social media account.

The provincial government delegation has visited the uThongathi area in the north of Durban, the largest city in the province, for an assessment and provision of disaster relief, according to the statement. “They were there to assess the damage caused by a storm which destroyed houses and led to the loss of 10 lives in the province.”

Other areas around Durban, including Umgababa, Durban Central, and the western parts of the city, also experienced heavy rainfall, leading to flooding of some households and roads, the provincial government said.
