Srinagar: On the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ladakh on July 26, officials said on Monday.
Modi would be visiting the Kargil War Memorial at Drass on Friday to attend the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas (victory day). The victory of the Indian Army over Pakistan in Kargil war in 1999 is celebrated as Vijay Diwas.
Officials said the PM will land at Drass Brigade Helipad in the morning on July 26.
Union Territory of Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor Ladakh Brig (Retd) B D Mishra reviewed arrangements for the PM’s visit on Sunday.
The LG would visit the Kargil War Memorial at Drass on July 24 to inspect the arrangements for the PM’s visit.
In 1999, Pakistani soldiers and militants from many groups had occupied several peaks from Drass to Batalik sector along the Line of Control (LoC) overlooking the strategic Srinagar-Leh highway. The Indian Army along with the Indian Air Force later launched a massive operation and in the 74 days of battles the Indian Army managed to win back its territory. And since then the Army has been observing July 26 as Vijay Diwas and the main function is held in Drass.
