Washington: The US Republican Party is likely to retain control over the House of Representatives, winning the majority of seats with Democrats close behind, according to a projection made by Decision Desk HQ on Tuesday.

The latest forecast by the service showed that Republicans are currently expected to get 218 mandates required for the majority and forecast to win 220. The Democratic Party is forecast to win 217 seats.

US media have reported that Republicans are also likely to win the majority in the Senate with 53 seats. If both projections are accurate, the Grand Old Party will control both houses of the US Congress. In this scenario, a Republican will be the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and US President-elect Donald Trump’s running mate, Vice President-elect JD Vance, will chair the Senate. This means that GOP members will be in the three top elected positions.

Donald Trump, who had already served as US president after the 2016 election, won the presidential election on November 5. He became the first politician in the United States since the 19th century to return to the White House after a four-year hiatus. All leading media outlets involved in vote counting, including the Associated Press, Fox News, CNN, NBC, ABC, and CBS, announced Trump’s victory. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris addressed supporters and announced that she would concede, while incumbent US President Joe Biden spoke with Trump and congratulated him.

The Electoral College from the states must vote for candidates in accordance with the will of the voters on December 17, and the new Congress will certify the results of the vote on January 6. The inauguration will take place on January 20.
