Kyiv: The United Nations is calling on the global community to prevent further escalation of the Ukraine conflict, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, commenting on reports about possible deployment of Western troops to Ukraine.

“We have been speaking out for the end of this conflict and not to encourage any further escalation from one side or the other. We want to see an end to the conflict for the sake of civilians in Ukraine, for the sake of civilians in Russia. We want to see an end to the conflict in line with general assembly resolutions, international law and territorial integrity,” Dujarric said on Monday.

Last week, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said that the West was planning to deploy some 100,000 “peacekeepers” in Ukraine to restore Ukraine’s combat capability.

Moscow has said that arms supplies to Ukraine by the West hinder the conflict settlement and directly involve NATO countries in the conflict. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted that any cargo containing weapons for Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia.
