Agartala: Tripura government has ordered an inquiry into the allegations of bribery for passing MBBS exam against the staff and faculties of Tripura Medical College (TMC), said Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha here on Monday.

The Crime Branch of Tripura police has already questioned Head of Physiology department Prof Soma Choudhury for her involvement in the deal to pass the medical students against cash after a specific complaint was lodged by a group of students two weeks ago.

Dr Saha, also a former professor of maxillofacial surgery at TMC, said, “When I received the information, I called for an investigation and instructed to take action against the accused persons as per the law. Nobody will be spared, and the government will not compromise with the students’ future.”

Allegedly, a section of faculties and officials of TMC and Tripura University manipulated the exam results to collect a large sum of money. The racket reportedly runs into the extent of ensuring the successful completion of MBBS exams, which triggered a serious concern.

According to the report, a few officials and faculty members were involved in the financial malpractice, which has been going on for some time. Many students, fearing repercussions, have reportedly complied with these demands, while a few others have raised complaints with authorities.

A student, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated, “We are being forced to pay to pass exams. This is unfair and goes against the principles of education. Authorities must take strict action against those responsible.”

However, police sources said that the TMC administration was also aware of these allegations and is closely monitoring the situation. And, recently, the Crime Branch of Tripura police has launched an inquiry into the allegations.

The opposition Congress demanded an independent probe into the allegations of corruption in passing MBBS courses from the society-run TMC affiliated under Tripura Central University.
