Kolkata: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has appointed 2007 batch IPS officer Syed Waquar Raza as DIG Murshidabad Range in West Bengal after removing incumbent Mukesh early this week, official sources said.

The new DIG appointment of border district of Murshidabad happened after the ECI removed Mukesh on Monday and sought names of three from panel to take over the post in the poll-bound area, which is very sensitive for its geographical location.

The ECI had asked State Chief Secretary B P Gopalika to send names as a replacement for Mukesh and accordingly the names were sent and the poll panel appointed Raza from those three names.

Earlier this month, the ECI removed IPS officer Saumya Roy, who was acting as the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of South West (Behala) division of Kolkata

Police, to a non-election-related post. Rahul De has replaced him as the DC South West (Behala) division. Roy is the husband of Arundhati Moitra popularly known as Lovely
Maitra, an elected Trinamool Congress MLA of Sonarpur Dakshin.

The ECI at first removed Rajeev Kumar, Director General of Police (DGP), Bengal, and appointed Sanjay Mukherjee in his place.
