United Nations: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present proposals for the organization’s reform to member states within a few weeks, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Friday.

In March, Guterres announced the launch of the UN-80 Initiative, which includes an audit of its operations to optimize expenses. The reforms are taking place amid cuts in the UN budget contributions from the United States and the Trump administration’s stance on funding humanitarian projects.

“The secretary general … will be reporting back to member states over the next few weeks because we will need their involvement, we will need their buy-in and we will need their commitment for these ambitious reforms,” Dujarric told a briefing.

As part of the relevant initiative, the work focuses on three directions: resource optimization, mandate reorganization, and structural changes within the UN system, the spokesman said.
