The constant urge, to watch on TV, or read the same news on your mobile phones can adversely affect your mind and body, especially if the news you are watching or reading, is tragic like news related to the COVID-19 pandemic, wars or any other unfortunate happening.

As per the research conducted at the Texas Tech University, people’s habit of continuing to read such news is making them ill and is increasing their stress levels, tension and irritability. This habit of reading tragic news with undivided attention has been named ‘doom-scrolling’.

This survey, published in the Health Communication Journal, was done on 1100 participants, out of whom, 17% of the people were suffering from serious levels of doom-scrolling, that is, they are addicted to know more and more about unfortunate news and incidents. As a result of which, they perceive the world to be dangerous place to be in.

It is noteworthy that people’s habit of doom-scrolling has augmented after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to experts, sometimes, creating a distance with news can make you a calm and focused individual and you will realize that you have happier moods.
