Snow in Kashmir, road to Ladakh closed

Srinagar: The upper reaches of the Kashmir Valley experienced fresh snowfall while the plains were lashed by rains on Tuesday, leading to the closure of the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri (SSG) road connecting Zojila pass in Ladakh.

The Meteorological Department forecast a generally cloudy sky and possibility of intermittent light to moderate rains or snow during the next 24 hours. There will be no snow in the plains.

The higher reaches of Pahalgam and Pir Panjal range in south Kashmir received light snowfall overnight.

Drass and higher areas in Kargil also got snowfall on Tuesday, an independent weather observatory Faizan Arif told UNI.

Zojila, Gumri and adjacent areas have been receiving snowfall since late afternoon on Monday. Several inches of snow have accumulated at various places.

In Kashmir, Gulmarg remained the coldest place with mercury dropping to 0 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.

Srinagar with overcast sky was lashed by rains on Tuesday morning. However, the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. The night temperature was recorded several notches up at most places in the Kashmir Valley.
