Cal HC disburses 1000 laptops to judicial officials in Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court in a bid to expedite the judicial process and efficiencies and digitised the records, has disbursed about 1000 new and updated laptops to its judicial officials in West Bengal and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, court sources said on Monday.

The distribution happened in presence of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and a host of other judges and the judicial representative at the Calcutta High Court premises last weekend.

Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam has stressed the importance of updated information technology in the judicial administration to address the day today programmed and for preservation of the records. He said the updated new laptops to the judicial officials were a gift from the Calcutta High Court in the festive seasons, aiming to facilitate their activities.

He underlined the advancement of technology and computerisation would ease the system, particularly in case disposal, especially during the challenges posed by the pandemic.

The Covid-19 has taught everyone in the judiciary a ‘cruel’ lesson, forcing it to adopt an alternative mode (virtual mode of hearing cases), The Chief Justice also reminded the audience that the initiative marked the first time such an endeavor had been undertaken by the Calcutta High Court.

Justice Tapabrata Chakroborty and Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya also addressed the gathering.

Justice Chakroborty urged officers to utilise the laptops effectively to improve both the quality and quantity of case disposal while emphasizing responsible ownership.

Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya highlighted the laptops as crucial resources for acquiring knowledge and empowering judicial officers. She urged officers to reciprocate by ensuring that justice reaches all corners of their districts and beyond.
