Kolkata: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday removed West Bengal DGP Rajiv Kumar, barely 48 hours after the model code conduct came into force following the announcement of 7 phases of polling in the state on Saturday, a report here said.
The report said the ECI also waned a panel of three officials by 5 PM on Monday to replace the DGP, who was appointed only three months ago.
BJP state Chief Sukanta Majumdar said more such partisan police officials in the districts of the state needed to be removed.
He said they had already told the ECI’s full bench against the DGP, who was also the city police commissioner.
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said they have experienced the DGP’s partisan policing.
The ECI said the removed DGP can not be involved in any way in the election procedures.
