Washington: The guilty verdict the New York jury delivered in former President Donald Trump’s “hush money” case means the tyranny future for the United States, former US Assistant Treasury Secretary Paul Craig Roberts told Sputnik.

“This means the future of America is tyranny,” Roberts stated. “An appeal will be made, but a state as corrupt as New York is incapable of producing a decision based on law. If there is any fight left in Americans, and I am unsure, a prison sentence from the totally corrupt judge should launch a civil war…If not, the people have submitted to tyranny.”

Earlier in the day, a New York jury found Trump guilty on all 34 criminal counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

“Keep in mind that these are 34 made-up felonies based on how an expense was recorded by accountants and attorneys. Trump did not record the expense. The expense was recorded according to accounting standards,” Roberts said.

Roberts went on to say that the New York case is a civil case “somehow turned into a felony case.”

“Keep in mind that it is a civil case without complainants, without harmed parties,” he added. “It is a case brought by a prosecutor who can show no party harmed.”

“What is frightening is that legally this is a case for which there are no legal grounds for bringing it,” Roberts said. “Yet, the bar associations, the law schools, the media said nothing. Getting Trump was so important that law was sacrificed for the purpose.”

Trump called the decision a disgrace and claimed the trial was rigged and that he is innocent.

The Trump legal team is expected to appeal the decision.

The court set the sentencing date for July 11.
