Kolkata: The indefinite cease-work by junior government medics at outdoor patients departments (OPDs) entered its 25th day on Monday while the striking doctors decided to lay siege to Lalbazar, Kolkata Police headquarters, demanding the resignation of City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, accusing him of failure to prevent vandalism in the R G Kar Hospital on August 14.

The Mamata Banerjee government has called a special two-day Assembly session starting Monday to table and pass a proposed bill to seek capital punishment for a convict in rape and murder of the women.

The medics and citizens from all walks of life have been demanding justice of the 31-year old post-graduate trainee lady doctor who was murdered in the Hospital on August 9.

The medics are also demanding the suspension of R G Kar Hospital’s former principal Sandip Ghosh, one of the suspects in the crime and also a suspect in an alleged financial scam in the institution.

The CBI, probing the twin cases following Calcutta High Court orders, continued its questioning of Ghosh on Monday. The former chief of the hospital has already undergone a lie detector test and face CBI interrogators for 15 days.

The federal agency also summoned hospital’s former superintendent Akhtar Ali, whose allegation and subsequent PIL led to the court ordering a CBI to probe into the alleged financial irregularities under Ghosh since 2021, sources said.

The CBI is expected to place its probe status report before the Supreme Court for September 5. The CBI had earlier told the apex court that the scene of crime was changed when they took over the case from Kolkata Police.

Ahead of the special West Bengal Assembly sitting on Monday, the BJP said that the ruling Trinamool Congress was

trying to divert attention of the people in the rape and murder case. The BJP also issued a whip to all its legislators to be present in the House.

The BJP also planned to protest at the offices of district magistrates across the state, demanding justice for the murdered Kolkata doctor.

Expressing confidence in the ongoing CBI probe, celebrated actor-director Aparna Sen on Sunday said the probe agency would be able to crack the crime.

Meanwhile, a drunken youth was arrested from the Esplanade for the alleged molestation of a girl whilst she was on protest.
