NDA candidates win two RS seats unopposed in Assam

Guwahati: With the opposition parties not filing any candidate for the two Rajya Sabha seats in Assam, NDA candidates including Kanad Purkayastha and sitting Rajya Sabha MP, Birendra Prasad Baishya won the two seats.

The ruling BJP nominated Kanad Purkayastha for one of the seats while it’s alliance partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) nominated Birendra Prasad Baishya.

Kanad is the son of BJP strongman from Barak Valley and former Union minister Kabindra Purkayastha.

The election to the two Rajya Sabha seats was necessitated as the term of Birendra Prasad Baishya (AGP) and Mission Ranjan Das of BJP is to expire on June 14.

Election to the two seats was slated for June 19 and the counting of votes was likely to take place the same day.

However, as there is no candidates from the opposition, both Purkayastha and Baishya were declared winners.
