Every month over 35,000 women are reported missing across India

India is witnessing a sharp rise in cases of missing women being reported across the country. Every month over 35,000 women are reported missing in India. It literally means 1157 women are reported missing every day.

In 2019, according to the National Crime Bureau Records (NCRB), 422439 women were reported missing in India.

In Maharashtra, 67746 women were reported missing, while in West Bengal 64382 women were reported missing. Rajasthan reported 22375 and  Delhi reported 27310 cases, while Odisha reported 21569, Chhatisgarh reported 19041.

NCRB reported 222949 missing women were traced in 2019. The percentage of recovery was 52.8 percent. However, 48.2 percent of women continue to remain missing and untraceable.

In 2019, missing women reported cases increased by 9.8 percent over the previous year, 2018, during which 384685 missing women cases were reported across the country. In 2018, 209852 missing women were traced and recovered. The percentage of traced cases was 54.6 percent.

In 2018, West Bengal reported 64,382 cases while Maharashtra reported 61913 cases. Madhya Pradesh reported 55358 cases while Delhi reported 32302 cases. Chhatisgarh reported 16578, Rajasthan 17507, and Odisha reported 12861 missing women cases.

The shocking truth is that while 50 percent of the missing women have been traced, 50 percent of the women remain untraced. In 2019, alone 199,490 women across India remain untraced. No one knows what has happened to these women and the cases of missing women reported continue to rise across India.
