New Delhi: Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit has recommended the name of Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor and as 50th CJI.
Lalit is retiring on November 8 this year. The next senior-most judge Justice Chandrachud will take oath on November 9 and demit the office on November 10, 2024.
The Union Law Ministry had on October 7, written a letter to Lalit requesting him to recommend his successor. Justice Chandrachud completed his LLB (Bachelor in Law, Degree) from Delhi University. He studied at Harvard University after receiving the prestigious Inlaks Scholarship. At Harvard, he completed his Masters in Law (LLM) and Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD).
Chandrachud practised as an advocate in the Supreme Court, besides the High Courts of Gujarat, Calcutta, Allahabad, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi before becoming a judge of the Bombay High Court.
