On Monday, July 31, a Hindu procession, being carried out by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, from Gurugram, Haryana, was violently obstructed by members of the Muslim community in the state’s Nuh district. The Muslims pelted stones on the procession, and committed arson by setting vehicles on fire. As per the police, while the procession was flagged off from Gurugram, when it reached Nuh’s Khedla Mod, it came under attack. At least four cars were set ablaze as well.

Reportedly, around 2500 people who were part of the Shobha Yatra, are trapped inside a Mandir, which they used as shelter following incessant attacks from the Muslims. As per reports, the trigger of the violence was an announcement made by Bajrang Dal activist and Gau Rakshak Monu Manesar through social media, that he would be joining the religious event at Nuh, despite threats given to him. Manesar was named as a suspect by the family of victims in the Nasir-Junaid murder case.

Speaking with the media, Haryana Home Minister, Anil Vij, said that the government had sent additional troops from the neighbouring districts to control the situation, and that helicopters were being arranged to send the troops. Internet services have been suspended till Wednesday, and the police had to fire teargas shells to control the situation.

Apart from the Muslims pelting stones and committing arson, a home guard was shot dead and about a dozen policemen have also been injured.
