Jalandhar: Protests erupted on the campus of Lovely Professional University here after a student was found dead in one of the hostel rooms.

The deceased has been identified as Agun, a resident of Kerala.

He was studying in the first year of B. Design at the LPU. A suicide note was also recovered from the spot in which only personal reasons were named as the cause for the alleged suicide.

Punjab police official said on Twitter: “We received info at around 5.30 pm on September 20 that a first-year student of B. Design at Lovely Professional University died by suicide. We reached the spot & recovered a suicide note which cited personal reasons; further investigation underway.

“We have found a suicide note from the spot in which the student cited some personal reason behind his extreme step. We have informed the family of the deceased and they will be reaching here soon. Further investigation into the matter is underway.”

As soon as the news of the death broke, students gathered in large number inside the campus late Tuesday to protest. They raised slogans: ‘we want justice’, and demanded thorough investigation into the incident.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving information from the authorities of the LPU and tried to pacify the agitating students.

However, police had to resort to mild lathi charge to bring the situation under control as the students refused to leave. Police have assured a thorough investigation into the death of the student.

Authorities of the Lovely Professional University have issued a statement and expressed grief over the death of the student.

“LPU fraternity is saddened by the unfortunate incident. The initial investigations by the Police and the contents of the suicide note point towards personal issues of the deceased.

“The University is providing full support to the authorities for further investigation. The University mourns the loss of the student and expressed its condolence to the bereaved family,” the LPU statement said.
